Senior Accountant Executive Accounts Department – Acentria Group Location: Westlands, Nairobi
As a Senior Accountant Executive at Acentria Group, you will be instrumental in managing the financial backbone of our insurance brokerage operations. You will ensure precise accounting, full regulatory compliance, robust financial controls, and efficient handling of transactions involving clients, cedants, reinsurers, and internal activities.
This senior role supports key areas including budgeting and forecasting, financial performance analysis, regulatory reporting (IRA, KRA, and other statutory bodies), debt and credit management, reinsurance claims collection and allocation, cost optimization initiatives, and enhancement of internal/external audit and risk processes.
The position demands deep technical accounting expertise, strong awareness of insurance sector regulations, and effective collaboration with business units, compliance teams, and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Insurance-Specific & Technical Financial Management
- Manage end-to-end treaty accounting, including accurate premium collection from clients and allocation against policy documents.
- Oversee timely remittance of premiums to insurers and reconcile insurer statements.
- Calculate, validate, and recognize brokerage commissions accurately and promptly per agency agreements and policy terms.
- Prepare and analyze commission schedules, investigating and resolving any discrepancies.
- Handle general accounting: prepare monthly/quarterly/annual management accounts and IFRS-compliant financial statements.
- Perform detailed variance analysis against budgets/forecasts with insightful commentary on performance.
- Manage the general ledger, including journal entries, accruals, and prepayments.
- Oversee accounts receivable (timely client invoicing, overdue premium follow-up, aging control) and accounts payable (accurate/timely payments to insurers, suppliers).
- Monitor daily cash flow, prepare forecasts, and manage working capital for optimal liquidity.
- Maintain financial record integrity within the company's ERP/accounting system.
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure full adherence to IRA regulations on client premium handling, trust accounts, and remittance timelines.
- Prepare and submit accurate, timely regulatory reports to the IRA.
- Maintain statutory compliance with KRA (PAYE, VAT, Withholding Tax, Corporation Tax) and other deductions (NSSF, SHIF, Housing Levy).
- Implement and monitor strong internal financial controls to prevent fraud, errors, or misappropriation.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation and audit trails for all transactions.
- Coordinate internal/external audits: prepare schedules, respond to queries, implement corrective actions, and liaise with auditors, bankers, KRA, and IRA.
Process Excellence, Reconciliation & Collaboration
- Review and improve financial processes/workflows for cost optimization, revenue assurance, and efficiency.
- Develop compliance checklists, dashboards, and key metric tracking.
- Collaborate closely with broking, underwriting, claims, procurement, HR, and internal audit teams to integrate financial data and resolve issues.
- Provide mentorship and oversight to junior accounting staff.
- Perform regular reconciliations (bank accounts, client premium ledgers, insurer statements, commissions, general ledger, debtors/creditors, balance sheet items).
- Review/approve journal entries, resolve discrepancies, and ensure authorized invoice processing.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or Business Administration (Accounting option).
- CPA(K) – mandatory; ACCA or equivalent an advantage.
- 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a reinsurance broker, insurer, or financial services/insurance environment.
- Strong knowledge of reinsurance treaty accounting, premium flows, commission structures, IFRS/IAS, and financial reporting.
- Practical experience with IRA regulatory requirements for insurance intermediaries.
- Solid tax expertise (VAT, PAYE, Withholding Tax, Corporation Tax).
- Proficiency in accounting/ERP systems, reconciliations, financial analysis, and reporting.
- High integrity, meticulous attention to detail, and a strong control mindset.
